It was created by the Lao people and is a popular national dish of Laos. It also is a popular food in the neighbouring Northeastern region of Thailand and has gained its popularity in the country and the rest of the continental Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam), as well as Xishuangbanna (China).
