Starting a week of vacation today. We’re cat sitting Kaz at our friends Chris & Erin’s place in Nanaimo.
I think the Mid-week Nanaimo Daytrip August 2021bis when we were last here. We’ll, other than December 2021 when we were here when everything was covered in snow.

We walked over to Thrifty Foods at Port Place Shopping Centre and got a few things for dinner.
There’s a BBQ here so I wanted to get some steak, and there ended up also being chicken drumsticks on sale so I got a bunch of those to make tonight and have for the week.
- hummus with caramelized onion
- fresh linguine noodles
- island brie
- English cucumber
- Paqui Mucho Nacho Cheese Chips
- blueberries
Also stopped at London Drugs
- a cold Fresca bottle for the walk home
- Dilmah Ceylon Tea
- two Ritter Sport chocolates
Just that 15min walk there and back was very hot. There’s a nice breeze but the sun is beating down pretty fiercely.
I prepped chicken drumsticks with:
- grapeseed oil
- koji salt
- regular salt
- turmeric
- paprika
- cumin
- coriander
- granulated garlic
- Kikkoman Kotteri Mirin
The steaks got a little koji salt and oil.
Now I’m enjoying the first of the tasty beers Chris left for me: White Sails Easy Peasy Fruit Sour
Picked a couple of squash from the garden and grilled them and an onion.
Made a chimichurri sauce
- green onion
- minced garlic clove
- cilantro
- red wine vinegar
- salt
- maple syrup
- fresh lime juice
- ground coriander
- olive oil
Really happy with how this turned out. Used it on the squash, the onion, the steak. Everything ;)

The BBQ is a bit frustrating. I can’t get it hotter than 300F so it just sort of steams everything other than a little browning where things touch the hot grill. I’ll see if there’s some other setting.
